Actively caring in Geography for Academic Gains

Passion for the subject matter is a fundamental driver of academic success. When educators and students genuinely care about what they’re teaching and learning, it transforms the educational experience into something far more engaging and impactful. This intrinsic motivation fuels curiosity, deepens understanding, and fosters a lifelong love of learning. All of this is first and foremost, but’s let make the connection to academic success, results, scores, report cards and university entrance rankings. From Year 1 to Year 12 or the equivalent wherever you are, care for the subject matter is the best study tool available and the key to improved results and overall high grades!

How to improve students academic performance

Firstly, when teachers demonstrate enthusiasm for their subject, it becomes contagious. A teacher’s passion can ignite a spark in students, making lessons more interesting and relatable. This enthusiasm helps to create a positive learning environment where students feel inspired and motivated to participate actively. For instance, a geography teacher who shares fascinating stories from their travels can make the subject come alive, transforming abstract concepts into tangible experiences.

Caring about the subject matter encourages students to invest more time and effort into their studies. When students are genuinely interested in what they’re learning, they are more likely to engage in deep thinking and critical analysis, leading to better retention and comprehension.

Caring about the subject matter is linked to greater perseverance and resilience. Students who are passionate about a subject are more likely to overcome challenges and setbacks. They view difficulties as opportunities to learn and grow rather than insurmountable obstacles. This mindset is crucial for academic success, as it fosters a growth mindset and encourages continuous improvement.

When students see the topics relevance to their lives, it enhances the practical application of knowledge, making learning more meaningful. An example might be, understanding some of the principles of economics (a part of Geography) becomes far more compelling when students can relate them to real-world financial decisions and current events. Geography also plays a crucial role in promoting gratitude and empathy, as students learn about diverse cultures, environments, and global challenges. This broader perspective fosters a deeper appreciation for the world and the people in it, cultivating a more compassionate and understanding mindset.

How to teach geography students to care

This is where the SOLO taxonomy, a framework that categorizes learning outcomes from surface to deep understanding, comes into play. By nurturing a genuine interest, educators can guide students through the stages of the SOLO taxonomy, helping them move from basic knowledge to sophisticated, abstract thinking. Take a look back at my earlier blog post for further detail about this essential component of how to teach teach geography.

Some additional tips include; finding geography videos such as on YouTube, Netflix and the National Geographic website. Find good research topics. We need to stay fresh in Geography and update our teaching. Google can be challenging yet wonderful, try searching top 10 research topics or research question ideas combined with some key words about your topic e.g. “research question ideas on earthquakes.”

Empathy tasks are extremely effective. These are tasks that explicitly promote empathy as part of the learning experience. Empathy tasks in geography, such as case studies and role-playing scenarios require students to navigate the challenges faced by communities affected by an issue, which will help foster a deeper understanding of big issues. These activities encourage students to view the world from different perspectives, promoting compassion and a greater appreciation for diverse cultures and environments. Topic examples cold be endangered species or the supply chain of chocolate. These activities on empathy will leave no student behind on the question of why is empathy important.
